The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Beauty

I’m a beauty blog lurker. One of my secret time waster activities is watching beauty reviews on youtube. Occasionally I get on a hair-do kick but then I realize that I’ve had the same hair since 1st grade (proof) and I move on to other obsessions, like makeup.

I have very little incentive to get all done up on any given day. In fact, most days I see about three people: N, my boss, and the lady who works at the post office. I know, I know, my life is so fabulous.

But whenever I watch one twelve too many Youtube beauty review videos, I head straight to my nearest Ulta and drop a stupid amount of money on products that are going to change my life. Only they never do and I wind up doing lazy makeup (or wearing none) every day. Recently, I’ve been trying to resist the urge to buy more and actually use the products I already have.

Requirements of my everyday products:
1. Easy to use
2. Make me feel prettyful
3. Oh, and super easy to use. Why? Because I have the makeup skills of the average 5th grader who just discovered glitter eyeshadow.

Neutrogena Pure & Free SPF 50    /    Maybelline Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser

Sunscreen – I don’t care if it’s in every makeup product I use, I still cover my face in a base of SPF 50. I used to use Neutrogena Clear Face which is the absolute best sunscreen I have ever found. It feels like nothing on your skin within 5 minute of putting it on. Unfortunately, I’ve read a lot recently about the dangers of some of the chemicals in sunscreen so I’ve switched to this Pure & Free formula which is a basic mineral sunscreen. I let this sink in a while before applying anything else. Note: I am not a scientist (duh) so do your own research about chemicals in sunscreen.

Concealer – I’m somehow simultaneously a morning person and a night owl which usually means I get very little sleep. I don’t mean to stay up reading until ungodly hours of the morning but I always do so I load my under eyes up with this stuff. It’s not the magic wand that so many beauty bloggers say it is but it is decent stuff for the price.

Mascara – I love Benefit They’re Real Mascara but can’t always justify the $26 a tube. I found L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara after a girl on the marathon team for my work (at a childhood cancer non-profit) ran a half marathon and her eyelashes still looked ahhh-mazing. I asked her what it was and have been using it ever since. It’s not quite as good as They’re Real and the wand takes some getting used to but it lengthens and separates really well for $8.

Sculpting – You thought I knew how to contour? Ha. I don’t. But I’m super cheap so instead of buying three products, I just bought this one. It looks really beautiful on and though I was intimidated by the bright pink, I just apply super light and build it up, then add a sweep of the highlighter above that. Sometimes I use the bronzer but only if I’m feeling extra sassy.

So there you have it. The lazy girl’s guide to looking semi-decent in public in less than 2 minutes. I also wear a powder over the sunscreen but I’m not thrilled with my current powder and am in desperate need of suggestions. Help!

Want to waste some time yourself? Here are some of my favorite Youtube beauty channels:

Eleventh Gorgeous – Are they twins? Are they sisters? Are they pretending when they act that ridiculous? I’m guessing no and wait til you see how they introduce every video! Still, it’s hard not to love them. Plus, they review all the regular gal (i.e. drugstore) makeup.

Makeup by Alli – Alli does a great job of reviewing both high end and drugstore makeup. She also has a good combination of tutorials and reviews and doesn’t sound like an idiot when she raves about BB Cream. Listen to some of the other beauty bloggers and you’ll get why that’s so refreshing.

And my favorite beauty bloggers, who also do videos occasionally: Glossy Blonde, 15 Steps Then a Beauty Blog, and The Small Things Blog.

Any other suggestions? Send them my way!

Today it’s my pleasure to introduce you to Patricia from Kisses and Croissants.

Patricia is wonderfully sweet blogger who is living life in France with her handsome husband. You can read more about their love story and I dare you to tell me it doesn’t sound like the cutest romantic comedy you’ve ever seen. While you’re there, check out Patricia’s 5 Reasons Why Dating a Foreigner is Good for You.

On a beauty note, Patricia did a great job of translating  10 American Beauty Tips from a French Perspective. It was awesome to read about what we get right (and wrong) in the beauty world! Patricia also wrote a hilarious post about the 5 Types of Creeper that you have to read. Based on the gifs, she shares my love for J. Law. She also gives us some French tips (bad words!) which certainly will help you out next time you drop the word douche in public. What? It’s French for shower!

And Patricia’s post today? It’s most definitely worth a read if you’ve ever felt homesick. You can also find Patricia on Twitter or add her to your daily reads via Bloglovin.

  • ahh glad i am not the only one that watches these even though i have no idea how to do real makeup! also, why is it that they are all in high school and can afford all the expensive makeup?! like arden rose?! youtube her if you haven’t already.

  • I’m careful to use safe products too and most makeup isn’t, but I have to admit I still use Loreal mascara too…I LOVE the voluminous. I have the blonde lashes issue and that helps quite a bit 😀

  • ughhh makeup channels and beauty blogs get me every time! I go on a mission to CVS after every time I get sucked in to one and buy almost everything they use in the video. I’m a sucker for life changing and face changing makeup. I justify in my head like “I will wear this everyday! It’s a must have! It’s good for my skin! I’ll look like Jennifer Aniston!” It’s a trap.

  • I’m the worst girl I know when it comes to makeup. If it takes more than 15 minutes, I’m not doing it. I need to figure out this contouring thing though…

  • I spend so much time watching Youtube videos of makeup and hair. It’s addicting! I’ve perfected how to get my routine down so it only takes 10 minutes each morning- thank God!

  • I’m either super lazy with my makeup, or super dramatic with my makeup. It’s mostly lazy. I just use BB cream, powder, blush, mascara and some kind of lipstick. I have a different brand of “dark circle remover” and it seems to make my circles darker somehow? I like your blog. Thanks for sharing about Patricia. I always enjoy reading new blogs.

    Life of Mabel

  • Amen for an easy beauty regimen! I might have to try that sephora scultping stuff. Lord knows I need some contouring.

  • haha you’re so funny. I’m the same way though. and I really can’t justify spending $26 on mascara either! ha

  • I haven’t tried any of these! I’m waiting to run out of concealer, so I can try the Age Rewind. I love the Garnier eye roller too. It takes away a lot of the puffiness.

I blogged about Eleventh Gorgeous as well in my July Favorites. These girls seem like they get excited about EVERYTHING, but it’s contagious.

    Check out my blog at!

  • You’re my twin when it comes to beauty videos. I’m obsessed and on a day to day basis, I use moisturizer, powder and eye liner but whenever I’ve been watching youtube videos, my wallet hurts because I drop wayyy too much money on beauty products that sit on the counter.

  • I have been watching tons and tons of YouTube videos lately all about beauty. So glad to know I am not alone. The products you have are great. Sunscreen is really bad for the environment, but sticking to the kind you have as a lesser damage percentage! Also, who doesn’t need some help under the eyes. I understand!

  • So I’m not the only one who does this? Good to know! Haha. It really is so addicting watching those videos and then instantly feeling the need to run to Ulta or Sephora to replicate it. They make it look so easy… keyword make. Because it just never works for me.

And I’m right there with you on the age rewind eraser. That stuff is a miracle worker!

  • Hi, I’m a blog lurker too, nice to meet you! Cute post, Nadine 🙂

    Beauty With Compassion

  • Wow. I had no idea about all the dangerous chemicals in sunscreen. This makes me feel so much better about that expensive mineral sunscreen I just bought. I got it because was the only one in the store that was SPF 50. Turns out it was an excellent purchase. Love this post! Thank you!

  • I didn’t know there were video reviews of beauty products! Thanks for introducing me to that Sephora sculpting trio. I might have to try that. I’ve always only used blush or bronzer…highlighting will be a nice change!

  • I’ve decided that since my boss has asked me twice in the past few weeks, “do you have a black eye?” that it’s time I try your suggestion the dark circle eraser. I’m a simple beauty routine as well…I figure my husband still married me after seeing me most days without make I’m good 😉

  • I feel like watching makeup youtube videos is like my dirty little secret! And I agree about eleventh georgeous. I think they play it up…. You should consider watching essiebutton. She has got to be my favorite, hands down. Funny, informative and simple (because who has time to do a smokey eye every damn day?)

The age rewind eraser has been on my list for quite some time (i’ve been using that lumi touch concealer thing from Maybelline), so thanks for the suggestion. Its moving right on up the priority list at Target. Right next to a new top, candle, picture frame and possibly some groceries (Target gets me every time…). Oh, and I totally agree about the mascara. Its my favorite drugstore one!

  • That meme is hysterical and I am going to have to check out this mascara!

    Sparkles and Shoes

  • Yes! I’ve used the same products since I started wearing makeup in high school and I’m so scared to try anything that’s too expensive – especially when it just gets smeared on my pillowcase when I forget to wash my face every night! oops! Eleventh Gorgeous looks like it’d be a blast to film.

  • I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use a highlighter! I got one in a recent Birchbox and just use it as eyeshadow. A GREAT powder I’ve found is from Body Shop called All in one Face Base. It’s a little more expensive (about $20) but I think I’ve had mine for about a year and use it daily. I should probably replace it because not sure if that’s hygienic, but the stuff really works!

  • I’ve been using that concealer for a few years now… there is nothing else like it! A few weeks ago, I ran out and waited a few days before I got more, and I SWEAR people kept walking up to me and asking me if I felt okay, and if I got enough sleep, and if I was sick. Because of that stupid concealer! I wish Maybelline would just sponsor my life.

  • Yesss, thank you for this. I just started a job where I have to create makeup tutorials (EEEEK!!). So I’ve been watching youtube channels constantly for inspiration and to learn some of the basics!! Hair is waaay easier for me. I definitely like the idea of having blush, bronzer and highlighter all in one.. blush has always scared me. I’ve seen some talented ladies use lipstick for blush! Craziness, I tell you! 🙂

  • so i am a benefit-aholic! i’ve tried every time of cheaper mascara and hate them becasue i have no lashes and benefit They’re Real does work wonders…i shall check L’Oreal Telescopic. and the sunscreen…i’m not out in the sun a lot during the school year so as long as my moisturizer has SPF i’m happy

  • I need to get some of that dark circle eraser 🙂

    Thanks for sharing!

  • My normal beauty routine is pretty simple: lazy days = a little blush, mascara and lip balm…really lazy days = nothing. I love makeup, but I’m really low key (probably TOO low key) when it comes to my own!

  • I became obsessed with beauty blogs and youtubes as well, and got sucked into a few makeup products, but then realised I’m way to lazy and cheap to spend so much money on a blush, so started turning to skincare experts, and now I really only put mascara on most days my skin has improved so much. Now skincare, that’s something I can get on board and invest in! Also, I love Patricia’s blog.

  • Well shoot, I’ve been working on a Lazy Girl’s guide post myself! I’ll change it from beauty to something else though (I’m super lazy so I’m sure I can find a new topic)! 🙂

And I am in total agreement with you – even though I’m a beauty product addict, I am lazy and like to sleep in, so on most days I go for multi-taskers or products that make me look pretty without much effort!

  • I’m always on the search for a mascara that will lengthen and last throughout the day- will definitely try this one out! Thanks!!

  • I am right there with you with having had the exact same hairdo since I was 5…I always wanted it to be curly! #straighthairproblems

  • Ugh why don’t I have an Ulta!??

  • #1 YouTube Beauty Guru Suggestion: emilynoel83 aka “Beauty Broadcast”. She is ah-maz-ing! She’s the one who first got me hooked on YouTube. She’s also a big time drugstore makeup lover, so she’s as not dangerous for you wallet as some gurus. In addition she’s always so great about suggesting things for people who are afraid of makeup/ not skilled. Please check her out, you won’t be disappointed.
As far as a good powder goes, try “Rimmel Stay Matte Long Lasting Pressed Powder”. It’s my current holy grail powder. Also, try the “Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Concealer” next time you’re out. I’ve used the one you’re using a bunch in the past and while I love it too, I think there is really something extra special about the Dream Lumi.

  • I like my makeup I am no expert when it comes to applying it and not sure if I know what really suits my complextion but I do think I look ok when wearing makeup

  • Liz

A friend of mine is a Mac makeup artist and I’m always superrrr jealous of her skills — I have none, but I’m going to have to look up these beauty channels stat to start working on my game!

    xo, Liz
