The Foundation of my Wardrobe

There is a reason I’m not a fashion blogger. And the reason is that 90% of the time I’m wearing jeans and a t-shirt. It’s my happy place. It’s what I feel most confident in. And honestly, it’s what I think looks best on me.

Here are the items that are the foundation of my wardrobe in fall and winter:

Black Jeans: Old Navy Rockstar (or Diva), $19
White Button Down Shirt: Old Navy, $18
Grey Tee: Target Mossimo, $9
Black Tee: H&M, $11
Blue Jeans: Forever 21, $7.80
Boots: GoJane Studded Quilted Boots, $45.40
Flats: Steve Madden Kegan, $49.98

I have simple t-shirts in nearly every color but the white, black, and grey are always my first pick. These two from Target and H&M are my absolute favorites. The black H&M one is slouchy enough to wear with leggings and looks great with an over sized sweater.

The best part about having such basics as a staple is that you can wear them so many different ways. For instance today I am wearing the black t-shirt in red with blue jeans, the brown studded Steve Madden flats, and an anchor print scarf. Yesterday I wore the white button down with the black jeans.

I have a massive scarf collection because really, scarves are just like statement necklaces but way more comfortable. Do statement necklaces drive anyone else crazy?

My scarf collection.

You can throw on a sweater or blazer over any of these items. Mix and match them all. Add a scarf for a burst of color. But the best part? They’ll never go out of style.

Today I’m so excited to introduce you to Karly Kim.

Karly has a whole bunch of crazy stories up her sleeve. Let’s start with this: Karly was almost cast as a bachelorette on The Bachelor! Karly has fashion sense well beyond mine and I love checking out her different looks (she’s a big fan of neutrals too!). She is also a photographer and happened to take the most epically beautiful photo I’ve seen in a long time. Do yourself a favor and head over to twitter to follow her. Girl is hilarious! For more of Karly, check out her blog or follow her on bloglovin.

  • Love this! I just posted a VERY similar article yesterday and am going to begin researching each basic and present several options! Love these!

  • I feel like I fiddle with statement necklaces too much when I wear them. They’ll get twisted or turn sideways or be so heavy I take it off halfway through the day.
But scarves? I have an honest to goodness obsession. I can’t stop buying them. Sometimes when it starts to really get cool, I have to tell myself NOT to wear one every. single. day. They’re just so comfortable! And functional! And fabulous.

  • i need black jeans! that would be a staple in my winter wardrobe, I am sure of it!

  • I like scarves better than necklaces, but it’s usually too hot here to ever where a scarf!

  • Karly is one of my favorites! I totally agree as well that scarves are the perfect statement piece!

  • And love the new blog design!

  • I love basics! And especially scarves. But it’s still too warm here (86 today!) to even think about a bulky scarf around my neck! 🙂

    carelessly graceful

  • I am jealous of your scarf collection! I started wearing scarves last year, I was afraid I couldn’t pull them off and then I realized…everyone looks good in a scarf! I love your basics, simple and perfect! Half of my closet is black and grey.

  • I live in jeans and tees, too! I feel completely out of my element in anything else. Great essentials!

  • I’m finding my closet becoming more and more filled with neutrals – they’re just soooo easy to throw something that looks amazing together. I’m definitely taking notes from you list – great mix for great pries 🙂

  • I love scarves over statement necklace . The reasons are : Scarves are lighter than necklaces and I have a bad collection when it comes to necklaces.

  • Yes, I can’t STAND statement necklaces. This is pretty much my closet too.

  • I love love love ensembles like this – just great basic pieces that are mix-and-match. And I love a few good statement pieces (maybe not necklaces!) that you can throw in the mix! Scarves for sure. I just wish I could get them cheaper!

  • I thought I had a lot of scarves… I think I’ve met my match!

  • Love your winter basics and scarf collection. Glad I’m not the only scarf hoarder. And I totally agree, they are like the statement necklaces of winter.

  • Okay, you’re totally making me want to go shopping for a new fall wardrobe! 😉
All of these pieces are lovely and so versatile!

  • Love how great these staples are- I need some more flats in my life and more scarves! Love how you can just throw it on with anything and make it into a whole new outfit 🙂

  • sounds about right! 🙂 good staples! 🙂

Scarves are my go to for sure!

  • wow! that is a scarf collection. I think I have like 3. I need more though!

  • I would love to take a dive in that scarf collection!! And good staples like this are a must for any wardrobe foundation. I learned the hard way by jumping right into clothing boldness I end up regretting. haha

  • Ooh la la! I’m dying over your insane scarf collection! I have exactly two but am determined to add more this year.

  • Lovely post!

Thank you for linking up with Friday’s Fab Favorites!

  • I love a good, dark jeans and a great leather boot!

    Sparkles and Shoes

  • My scarves serve as statements too. I don’t like the necklaces either. I can’t deal with the weight.

  • Love this! Jeans and basic tees are the best! xo

  • I love scarves and have a ton but I love statement necklaces too!! I have way too many of both.

  • Lauren, I am all about wearing what makes you happy! Rock jeans and a tee all you want!!! xo

  • Statement necklaces make me crazy but I am all about the scarves! Thank goodness I live in a place where it’s Fall 10 months of the year!

  • I concur – scarves are more comfortable type of statement pieces! Just like you, I’m all about comfort. I’m most comfortable in jeans and a tee with a few fashionable pieces. I also love all the neutral colors on me!

    Carla @ Love Cartista

  • Ha! I can so relate… t-shirts and jeans are my comfort choice too! I love it on most days 😉

By the way, I’ve updated my blog with a new post. I’d love for you to swing by 🙂

  • I love your style choices! I have those boots too and love them!

  • First, I’ve seen Karly everywhere lately and she’s quickly become one of my favorite people. She’s fabulous.

Also – I have a basic winter/fall wardrobe too. Skirt, tights/leggings, top, jacket/sweater, boots, scarf. Sometimes I replace the skirt and tights with jeans. Then on occasion I’ll add a hat. Boom. Done. It’s the best “uniform” cause I can do a lot with it, and it’s easy while still looking good.
