How I Organize My Blog – And My Life!

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of BIC 4-Color pen for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

The biggest lie that I tell myself is this: Oh you don’t need to write that down. You’ll remember. NO. YOU. WON’T.

So after many blog post ideas lost and too many oops-I-forgots at work and in life, I created a system. No, I don’t use a fancy $70 planner with stickers, inspirational quotes, or any other non-sense. I’m too cheap for that, obviously. I use a simple, lined notebook that I got at Marshall’s for $4.99. I take it everywhere with me.

Then, on each page, I write the date at the top in blue and create 4 sections down the page in lime green:

  • Done & Done / Accomplished
  • Don’t Forget / Remember
  • Ideas
  • Post

I keep each page color-coded with fun colors for each area of my life. Because I’m a girly-girl and I’m also somehow not responsible enough to keep track of several different colored pens, I use the BIC ® 4-Color Pen because its 4 Inseparable Colors in 1 Pen. That, I can keep track of.

Throughout the day as things come up for my work or blog, I add them to the appropriate section of my page.

Each color of the BIC® 4-Color pen has its own distinct personality. Those personalities help me remember which to use for what area of my life AND keep my planner nice and colorful.

Blue – Blue is easy-going and confident. He wants to be at the head of the class. That’s why I use blue for the dates at the top of each page.

Purple – Purple is catchy and wants to be royal (i.e. important). She’s different enough that she stands out, but not so obnoxious that she’s inappropriate. That’s why I let her handle all the work stuff. If I do something work related, I write it in purple.

Lime Green – Lime is silly and laid-back. Lime doesn’t beg to be noticed. I use Lime for each header of the different sections down the page (and sometimes for doodling).

Pink – Pink is fun and not afraid to be herself. She’s girly and confident and guess what? She’s perfect for blogging. Since I feel most “pink”, I use pink for blog stuff. My blog is very “me” and pink is definitely the most “me”.

I like being able to look back on my week and see what I’ve accomplished and this has truly helped me to remember little things that I would normally forget.

Want to start your own inexpensive, color-coded notebook? Check out the BIC® 4-Color Pen on Facebook and Twitter. You can pick one up from Amazon or Staples. While you’re there, you can pick up a fun notebook of your own or head to Marshalls, like I did. Need a little laugh? Check out their commercials:

  • True story: I won’t use anything except blue or black ink. Colored ink just isn’t my thing. I really need to get into writing things down too. Blog posts, story ideas, things I promise myself I’ll remember to do but never actually do.

    • They do have the 4-Color Pen in one that has black, blue, red, and green. I’m more of a bright colors girl because the color coding helps me organize the different areas of my life. They have lots of notebooks (ones even smaller than this one) at Marshalls though so definitely check them out and try to keep one with you so you don’t forget things.

When it Gomes to remembering things I am the same way! I have to write things down or I WILL forget haha. Also you’re so right snout the pen! It’s so convenient to jot have to carry around multiple pens to get the colors you wantM I also own this pen, and I love it. 🙂

    • I actually owned this pen before Social Spark emailed me and asked me to review it. I was like, um, I don’t need to buy one, I already use it every day!

  • You’re so right! When I come up with a blog idea and DON’T write it down, I DO forget it. Usually they come at the worst times, like when I’m driving or in the shower. Thankfully I can Siri those ideas in the car on the fly (usually at a stoplight). The shower though, those are tough!

Loved seeing how you organize your blog and life. I like it a lot. Even though I have a $70 planner 😉

    • The Erin Condren and Whitney English life planners ARE beautiful, I’ll give them that. I’m just too cheap.

  • Wow! Haven’t seen one of those in a long time! I had one of those pens in middle school and was obsessed with it, but I don’t think I’ve used one since then. Ha! Might have to go pick one up and take a stroll down memory lane.

    • I had one too! We actually got this pen in my office as a promotional product and I snatched it up real quick. I’ve been using it for about a year (I’m shocked it hasn’t run out yet) so it was perfect that they asked me to review the 4-Color pen!

  • I have a plain notebook to jot down blog post ideas in. Everything else goes in my phone.

    • When I’m in my car I use Siri to take notes on my iPhone to make sure I don’t forget things before I get where I’m going.

  • Those pens are back? So cool! I used to have so many of them while at school!

  • Haha Ive seen those silly commercials and I was surprised that these pens are making a comeback, reminded me of childhood.

  • I recently started carrying a little notebook with me after reading Getting Things Done, but I don’t have a nifty pen with 4 different colors! By the way, I love this post! I have seen so many obviously and obnoxiously sponsored posts lately that it was refreshing to see a sponsored post that was still very real and normal, I can actually picture you writing this post even if you hadn’t been sponsored to do so, so thank you for that!

    • Thank YOU for this comment. I rarely accept sponsored posts and when I do, it’s always for something that I’d actually use. I actually owned and used this pen for about a year when Social Spark emailed me to do this post. I was like um YES I’ll write a post about it, I already use it every day! That’s the best kind of sponsored post, isn’t it? This is really how I use it, and have been using it, for over a year.

  • I’m uberjealous of your organized self… I think my alter ego could do this, but for now, I need more guidance. I love, love, love your rational though!

    • I’m not super organized in all areas of my life, I promise! (you should see my closet)

I actually have to write a weekly update email for work every Friday. That’s why I got started writing things down because when I went to tell my boss what I did that week, I’d completely blank. Now I can reference what I did each day and it makes that email easier to write. I also use it for my blog now too.

  • Ah, the nostalgia – I hope they bring the crazy 20-some color one back too 😉

    • I totally had a jumbo one with way more colors too. Where do I get one of those!?

  • I love your blog. Your writing is so true and witty. This post is just wonderful. I recently started blogging and need to use your method when organizing my day!

    • It really helps me with work and with my blog. Give it a try!

  • Oh I am so jealous I would love to be that organized

    • I promise I’m only organized in this small little way. There are lots of parts of my life that are super messy (like my closet).

  • Colored pens make having to schedule your life ten times better.

  • As evidenced by one of my newest posts, I am a major pen hoarder. Like, obsessed. I could do with an efficient pen like this when I’m in a bind. Otherwise, I carry around a stuffed-to-the-gills pencil case like I’m in high school, filled with Microns and LePens. Sigh!

  • I love how you color code it – so fun!

  • OMG! i love this post! i used to use the bic 4 colored pen in college during class. I had all my notes color coordinated. But it pretty bad b/c i would click click click–constantly changing the colors in some classes and my friends would get soo annoyed. But i didn’t care b/c i had the best notes and it helped studying for those big lecture classes soo much easier. I forgot about that until now. I’m totally going to do this again for my blog posts –like you suggest. Great idea!!

  • Just yesterday I bought a “rainbow notebook” 🙂 There are 6 different color sections. So bright and fun! My phone is in service, so I need smth to write my thoughts and ideas to.
Still sometimes it’s tough to get yourself be organized and write down every idea. Happens to me 🙂

    Have a lovely day! Hugs!
