It’s a Friday afternoon and I’ve dug up the coolest ish on the internet to share with you. Enjoy and Happy Friday!

A recent podcast by Freakonomics Radio (one of my favorite podcasts) compared the effects of alcohol and marijuana. Shocker, alcohol is more dangerous.

An Open Letter to American Girl – A must read article from a fellow blogger, Lisa, about the lack of dolls of color offered by American Girl. As a former American Girl lover (and proud owner of Samantha, Felicity, Kirsten, and Josefina), I’ve watched as the brand has become so much more than what it was when I was young. But as a future mother of half-Persian children (should we be so lucky), I’m disappointed to hear they are discontinuing several dolls of color.

Fellow Whovians, did you know that the Daleks invaded the Rugrats? There are so many Doctor Who references hiding in other shows, it’s crazy.

We know I’m not a fan of tattoos. But one of my favorite bloggers, Amber from Mr. Thomas and Me is. I still love her (it’s crazy, people can have different likes/dislikes/opinions/interests and still be friends). She wrote a fabulous article on what you absolutely need to know before you get that ink. Read it if you’ve ever even considered getting a tattoo.

Google recently published comprehensive gender and ethnic demographics for its staff. Only 30% of Google’s staff are women. Kind of makes me wish I got my degree in computer science.

Speaking of techy women – want to add beautiful detail to your blog design? Lisette showed us how to create a custom gravitar for WordPress comments. If you check out her blog, she’s paid close attention to all the little details and it’s just gorgeous. Which makes sense, she’s a designer. Guess whose redesign she’s working on next…?

A recent study found that (allegedly) cat people are smarter than dog people (insert eye roll here). In the study, 60% of people identified themselves as dog lovers while 11% of people identified as cat lovers. Archie and I stand by our feelings that we don’t trust people who don’t like dogs (and especially people who don’t like him). Dog people rule!

Apple’s biggest conference, WWDC, starts June 2nd. Traditionally, this is when we find out what awesome stuff Apple will be releasing over the next year. iPhone 6, Retina for the MacBook Air, wearables, and more. Here are 13 things to expect from Apple at WWDC 2014.

This is what happens when parents love their children unconditionally. I cried. What an incredible family.

I really enjoyed this post about blogging philosophies (frequency/quality vs. quantity) by Emily. I have the same conversations with myself sometimes. She was dead on with this, “Does the world really need another “this is what I did over the weekend” blog post or another Instagram photo of Starbucks? Not really.”

This TED talk by social psychologist Amy Cuddy called Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are is eye-opening and insightful. Pose like you’re powerful, act like you’re confident and you’re more likely to become those things. I’ve been more conscious of my posture and body language since watching this.

After reading a review of bareSkin Liquid Foundation by bareMinerals by Lauren, I ran over to Ulta to try it out. The makeup artist tried every pale shade on me and none of them worked. They were all too dark! True life: I’m officially the whitest white girl. The makeup artist did say that they are getting a lot of negative feedback about the colors and wearability of the formula (it did make my skin look flawless, albeit a different color than my neck).

And finally, a subscription box I can get on board with. Chocolate delivery? Yes, Please.

Enjoy the weekend! Come back tomorrow for a Saturday Takeover by Emily from Emily Makes that you won’t want to miss!

  • I noticed the Daleks in Rugrats before, but it’s so crazy all the places you can find references! And I just read that article about the transgendered boy. They are such an incredible family, and he has amazing parents! I’m so happy to know that there are parents like that out there!

  • Can’t wait to see what Lisette creates for you! Ryland’s story is so powerful. Bless him and his parents. I can’t imagine how hard it would be to have a transgender child. The fears you would have for him/her. The complexities of going through puberty. I would do the same exact thing though.

  • The body language TED talk is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE of all time. I watch is again every now and then and consistently practice it when I get the chance. It makes such a big difference!

    • It was really one of the best I’ve seen. N keeps telling me – do the victory pose! – when I have a rough day.

  • Ryland’s story was incredible! I almost started crying… I’m so glad the parents are accepting and supportive of their son- we need more parents like that (:

  • Oooooh! I’ve actually been thinking about getting a tattoo lately so I will definitely make sure to check out Amber’s post!

  • Ryland’s story…God bless his parents. Thank you for including my piece on today’s post. 🙂

  • I don’t trust people who don’t like animals…. period!

  • Such a shame about the American Girls. They are so different from what they were when I was growing up. It was more about history lessons and less about crazy market expansion (granted even then the stuff was crazy expensive), but that is sad.

    • I think the tipping point was when they came out with the “like me” dolls. Like, yes, let’s encourage narcissism from an early age! lol I had the historical dolls and it was very much about the history and reading the books. Hopefully they’ll get back to that.

  • Ah, the American Girl doll thing makes me mad, too! My children will also be part Persian and part Mexican so they will be wanting dolls with slightly darker skin.

Do you remember the American Girl magazine? I used to think that of all the products available to us as kids, American Girl was actually the most inclusive.

  • Thanks so much for the shout-out! And isn’t all of the Doctor Who references in Rugrats AWESOME?
