How to Stay Sane and Organized in Chaotic Times

Hello Back East Blonde readers, I’m Kalyn and I blog over at Geez, Louise. Why “Geez, Louise?” Well it’s pretty simple… Louise is my middle name and its a common exasperation pointed my way.

If you’ve never read my blog before then you probably don’t know that my life is a chaotic mess right now. I’ll give you the short and sweet version: I’m an LPN currently working on a part to full time basis while going to school to be an RN. In addition to that I have my blog (duh) and a design website that usually stays consistently busy. I also have a boyfriend whom I love dearly and I am working on buying a house with (which is a lot of work in itself).

Geez, Louise

So yeah, my life is crazy and I’ve had a lot of people ask me how I keep track of everything. My first answer is as much wine as possible but there are a few other things that have helped keep me sane and semi-organized.

1. Allot a specific time for everything.
There are some days when I have literally written out a “schedule” for my day. Like 8 am – 10 am, wake up, eat and go to the gym. 11 am – 1 pm, lunch, blog reading, meal prep. 1 pm – 3 pm work on paper/project/study for test. You get it. When I do this it helps keep me on track and prevents aimless social media trolling and things like that.

2. Do one thing every day that you enjoy.

For me, it’s the gym. No, I don’t go every day but I go 4-5 times a week and it is my time to enjoy myself and not think about school, work, Derek, or blogging. It’s my time and without it I would go crazy. It can be anything from walking your dog around the neighborhood to catching up on your DVR to reading a favorite book. Anything that helps you relax, do it for 30 minutes to an hour every day.

3. Realize there will be hard days and there will be fun days.
Some weeks there are three days in a row where I am busting my ass going to work for 12 hours at a time, school, working on designs, looking at houses, and trying to feed myself and look like a decent person in between. What keeps me going on these days is knowing that I get a whole day off soon to do something fun.

4. Take an off day.

In relation to having three hard days in a row, I always try to have one day a week where I do whatever I want. This usually consists of going mountain biking with Derek, having a nice Netflix binge, or going to the movies all by my self (it’s actually more fun than you think).

What do you do to keep yourself sane when you feel overwhelmed by life?

  • Great advice!

  • This is all great advice!

  • Definitely great advice. I think my biggest thing when life gets chaotic is just to remember to force myself into some downtime. Otherwise I become completely unbearable to everyone around me.

    • Relaxation is a must! If I don’t do something fun every once in a while, I’ll go crazy!

  • Great advice! Definitely #2! I think that is one that people often forget when life gets really busy! Also, I love your “High Five” sweatshirt!

  • Nice post. In staying organized, I like to plan things ahead, very much like your tip #1 – have a set time for the daily essentials. Also, I recently picked up meal planning and prep, really liking the idea of planning and prepping for the upcoming week, so during the week I have one less thing to worry about (having nutritious food ready to munch on). Thought I would share 🙂

  • Wonderful website. A lot of helpful info here. I’m sending it to several pals ans additionally sharing in delicious. And of course, thanks on your sweat!
