Great Products to Save Your Dry Winter Skin

Winter Skin Essentials #beauty #winter #skincare | www.eastandblog.com

I’m a dry skin sufferer in the summer so you can imagine what the cold of winter does to my skin. Flakes on flakes on flakes! It’s horrible and it makes applying makeup challenging. Here are the products I’m using this winter to keep the flakes away and how I’m faking it on days they flare up.

 1. Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Relief

Until recently, I used Argan Oil on my face. Though it worked wonders (and I even feel it helped decrease acne), when winter hit, my flakes returned. Argan oil is a dry oil and therefore isn’t quite as moisturizing as what I needed. The Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Relief has significantly reduced my flakes.

2. Baking Soda

Once a week, I add baking soda to my face wash and give myself a good scrub. The fine particles of the baking soda are the best exfoliant I’ve ever found!

3. The right foundation

Foundation works completely differently on dry skin than it does on oily skin. I love my Tarte Amazonian Clay foundation but when my skin is really dry, it emphasizes the flakes. For dry skin, the best drugstore foundation I’ve found is Revlon Colorstay for Normal/Dry skin. If you’re looking for a department store option, I’ve been loving the Estee Lauder Double Wear Light (the original Double Wear is great too but is very very full coverage – a little too much for me).

The thing is, no foundation works well on dry skin if it isn’t applied right. Which brings me to my next point…

4. Beauty Blender

This is absolutely my #1 tip to other dry skinned girls out there.

Prior to buying a beauty blender knockoff, I’d been using a flat-topped buffing brush (this one is great and affordable). It’s so easy to apply foundation with a brush (and the finish is gorgeous), and I’d highly recommend it for the oily skinned girls among us. That said, the buffing motion stirs up all those little skin flakes – something that absolutely had never occurred to me.

For us dry skinned girls, wet the beauty blender and then put foundation on the back of your hand and apply in a blotting motion. I’ve found this helps keep my skin from looking so dry, even if it actually is.

5. Aquaphor for the lips

Nothing works better. Period. I keep the big tube with me at all times during the winter. It’s a cuticle saver too!

Do you have any suggestions for dry, winter skin? I’m always looking for new products to help combat dryness!

  • I’m definitely going to have to try that Aquafor for my lips. They’ve been killing me lately! Any suggestions for hand lotion though? My hands have been cracking like crazy. I have these random cuts on my fingers cause my hands are so dry. I use Aveeno lotion and started to use it last year when I got my tattoos and it worked great. But this year, my hands are awful.

  • I would have never thought to use baking soda – great idea!

  • the clinique moisture surge is one of my fav products

Thank you for the tips! I rarely find any product suggestions for dry skin and am happy you wrote this post. I haven’t tried the Clinique moisture surge, but I would definitely recommend clinique’s dramatically different moisturising lotion. They also have a gel version of it, but I find the lotion way better. Use it for years now, and suffering from rosacea, this is the best moisturiser I ever tried. It is very gentle to my sensitive skin and still does the best job. A very long comment… Love from Germany!

I never thought about the buffing brush kicking up skin flakes either, I’ll have to try the beauty blender? What shade do you use in Tarte & Estee Lauder? I have very fair skin like yours, and it can be so hard to find a light enough match in drug store brands, and your skin always looks flawless! (the links brought me to medium beige, but I didn’t think that’s your color!)

  • Aquaphor is my saving grace!

  • Jae

I super agree with Aquaphor! I apply it on my legs, too, during the cold weather/season!

  • That’s a good idea to use aquaphor for cuticles! I use it for extra dry skin and lips.
