Black Teacups and the Importance of Grandparents

My great-grandmother collected individual teacups. She used to go to the department store in downtown Baltimore and buy the cups from sets that had been broken during shipment. As a result, my family has quite a collection of individual, unique teacups.  Since I am a bit more girly than my Mom, my Grandmother has given quite a few to me.

As a teenager, my Grandmother often made me tea after school (especially if I was upset). She’d always let me use the fancy china and would serve the tea in a beautiful African violet patterned teapot. We aired lots of worries over cups of tea. In all that time, this was my very favorite teacup:
I always think of how rare it is to have a black teacup. It’s certainly not a popular color for such a delicate item. It also reminds me of how thankful I am to have grown up next door to my Grandmother. Here is another favorite, probably more my Grandmother’s style:

Now I don’t know anything about the brands of china or how much they are worth (I wouldn’t sell them for any amount of money). They each sit on my mantle with a few other beauties and remind me of all of those cups of tea I drank with Grammy. And I’m reminded of how incredibly thankful I am to have been raised with her right next door.
She helped me pick out (and often paid for) every dress I wore to every school dance. Her guidance helped me establish frugal habits and her voice plays in my head whenever I’m grocery shopping (“now that’s a good price for a melon” or “you don’t need brand name of that”). She tried her best to teach me good manners and insisted that I never show too much leg and or too much chest. She helped shape who I am, and established my love of china and antiques along the way. Grandparents are just so important and I know I’ve been lucky to be close to mine.
These teacups are just so full of memories and lessons learned. I can’t help but adore them.
Do you have any objects that hold meaning to you?
