My 7 Must-Have Beauty Products

7 Must-Have Beauty Products including L'Oreal Voluminos Mascara and Colour Riche Balm, CeraVe Lotion, Pureology, and more #beauty #musthave

Some products are just tried and true. I realized yesterday as I was finishing my third tube of L’Oreal Colour Riche Balm that I’ve never taken the adequate time to rave about it on this here blog. There are other products I use every day, without fail, but who wants to hear me rave about bar soap? Bo-ring. But I adore Dove plain bar soap. I really do. So without further adieu, here are 7 beauty products I buy and re-buy and will always have on hand. Always.

1. Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner. If you’ve read my how to grow your hair long hair -fast post, you know I attribute my hair’s health to this magic potion. The shiz is expensive but I bought a liter of it off Amazon ages ago and I’m not even half way done. Plus, it’s Vegan. That opened the door to the question…why the hell is there any shampoo/conditioner that isn’t Vegan? So. Confused.

2. Dove White Beauty Bar. An oldie but a goodie. It’s in our shower and always will be.

3. E.L.F. Eyeliner Pencil. $1 and it works as well as the $5 stuff. Hell, even the $14 stuff. Need I say more? Plus, it comes with a sharpener! BONUS.

4. CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion. This was recommended to me by my dermatologist years ago. I don’t know that it’s made specifically for the face, though it’s oil-free and the derm suggested I use it on my super sensitive face. It does a great job of moisturizing my dry skin and wears well under makeup.

I later read some reviews of super expensive face creams who were touting ceramides and hyaluronic acid and I was like, wait, my $12 face lotion already has those. Google some reviews. People love this stuff. Also the bottle is ginormous and it will take you at least 8 months to use.

5. Garnier BB Cream. I’m on my third tube. It’s like makeup for girls who never learned how to do makeup (uhm, that’s me). I rub it in like lotion and poof, flawless skin. It’s great for lazy people and doesn’t emphasize dry skin, an issue I frequently have with traditional foundation.

6. L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Lip Balm. I’ve tried this in Heavenly Berry, Caring Coral, and Rose Elixir. To be honest, the colors are so faint they aren’t that different. The Heavenly Berry is more of a my-lips-but-better situation, the Caring Coral looks like my lips, and the Rose Elixir adds a faint pretty light pink.

The formula isn’t waxy like a Burt’s Bees (though I do love the waxiness of Burt’s). It’s more like a gel but not as thin as the Maybelline Color Whispers. It has some substance, which I like. If something is on my lips, I want to feel it on my lips! Plus the packaging feels glamorous. I’ll keep buying these. Up next, I’m trying the Pink Satin shade, which I’ve heard is a dupe for the Dior Addict Lip Glow.

7. L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara. I’ve tried tons of mascaras and I always come back to this one. Sure, I’d love to wear Benefit They’re Real all the time but $23 for mascara isn’t in the cards for me. Maybe I’m the only one but I kind of like the old school (i.e. non-spikey plastic) brush. This formula holds curl better than others and the Carbon Black version really makes your eyes pop.

So in a way, today was me playing beauty blogger. I’m way more of a product junkie than I let on. I’m so good at wasting hours watching beauty tutorials on youtube that it could be in my “skills” section of my resume. Call it internet research.

What products do you swear by? Beauty vloggers do their “empties” videos and if I made one, these would all be on mine.

YOU MIGHT LIKE:
  • My absolute favorite mascara! It’s pretty darn cheap and pretty darn amazing! I’m always looking for good shampoos and lotions, so I will have to give these a try!

    • Pureology is expensive but it’s so worth it. My stylist told me to use a pea size amount of the shampoo and a quarter size amount of the conditioner. The shampoo doesn’t really lather and it’s weird to get used to by my hair has gotten so much healthier!

  • I just started using one of the cerave cleansers and am thinking of trying one of the moisturizers next! I have crazy sensitive skin and I like the moisturizer I’ve been using but it’s a bit too thick under my makeup, so it sounds like the cerave might be a good option for me to try! I love the dove sensitive skin body wash– it’s all I can use to shave my legs!

    • The CeraVe is fabulous lotion and it works well under make up. Give it a try.

  • I love when bloggers share what products they love! I’ve used quite a few of these products before and will definitely say that most of them are keepers for me (Cerva Ve, Pureology, and Dove Beauty Bars). I’ve never tried the Elf eye pencils because normally I don’t wear liner, but for a $1, I think it could definitely be worth trying. I’ve tried Garnier BB and though it provides really nice coverage, I have oily skin and the product just doesn’t wear well on my skin. It feels a bit too heavy for me, but I’ve recommended it to some of my friends as a great place to start if you’re new to BB’s.

I’ve also never tried the Color Riche Balm. I’ve seen it, but never taken the plunge. Glad to hear more about it! Also, for a self proclaimed mascara junkie I will admit that this is one of the brands I haven’t tried. The way I feed my designer mascara fix is the to get the sample tubes that are a fraction of the cost of regularly sized tubes and last about a month if you use it everyday (and a tad longer if you don’t)!

    • I’ve heard the Garnier BB Cream isn’t great for oily skin, although now they do have a version of it that is specifically for oily skin. I wonder if that would be better.

Also the Colour Riche Balm – try it! It’s a fancier and slightly tinted version of chap stick. And as far as mascara goes, I feel like there are enough drugstore kinds that tempt me that I’d usually rather spend $8 on a full tube than $10 on a mini tube. I’m just cheap like that.

  • Erin Sulla

I swear by that Garner BB cream! I get it for cheap at Costco and it lasts forever. I totally agree that it is a dream for girls who never learned how to do makeup. Thick cover ups just feel gross on my skin and this stuff actually feels a bit moisturizing (plus it has some sunscreen). I just blot some powder on top and i’m good to go! I will try that moisturizing cream too! Great suggestion. I also have super dry skin and the cold weather does not help it! Thanks for the tip!

    • Another dry skin person! My skin is horrible and the winter just makes it more dry and flaky. The Garnier BB Cream really does a good job of not emphasizing it. I apply the CeraVe, wait 5 minutes, and then apply the BB Cream. Tons of moisture!

  • Love that BB cream!

  • Believe it or not I haven’t tried any of these products. I love seeing what other people use. Thanks for the recommendations.

    • Well then, you’ve got a drugstore trip ahead of you! They’re worth it, I promise. And all but the Pureology are drugstore products.

  • Make up for girls who never learned how to do makeup. YES! That is me to a tee, so refreshing to see it’s not only me! We swear by the dove in our house too, I have the liquid version at our kitchen sink but it just isn’t the same. Bar soap forever!

    • I do think that using a flat brush to apply foundation does make it a little easier, though I still prefer just to rub this BB cream in with my fingers. It’s fool proof.

  • My tried and true mascara is Maybelline Great Lash – in the hot pink and green tube. It is what my mom used and what I’ve always used and come back to after trying new (expensive) brands. I’ve never tried BB cream but I hear it’s good if you aren’t a fan of heavy foundation.

    • The Maybelline Great Lash mascara in waterproof is the only mascara that will completely hold the curl in my eyelashes. They are so naturally straight that it takes a legit product to keep them curled (and I love them curled!). I can’t wear waterproof mascara every day because it dries my eyelashes out and they start to break/fall out but I do love the stuff.

  • Yes I do agree some must haves there

  • I’m going to do that BB cream next. I bought the revlon one this last time and I thinks it’s just … Ehhh.

  • Dove for the win! It’s all I’ve ever used since I was a child, and my skin has always been great

  • Ok, I’m totally trying that shampoo/conditioner next and I’m totally going to read your long hair post! I have always had trouble growing out my hair. I am so glad you posted this!

  • I’m in the market for new shampoo- whyyyyy did you have to post an awesome (but so expensive) one?! NOW I WANT IT. This is not good for my bank account, hahaha 🙂

  • Gahhh. I LOVEEE Pureology so, so much. Much like my go-to Moroccan Oil hairspray, the price tag is so worth it!

  • I love this list! I’m always curious what about other people’s beauty routines because I’m 27 and I still haven’t figured this shit out! I’m going to try that shampoo and conditionor as well as the CeraVe. Thanks for the tips!

  • Kai

You had me at “grow your hair long fast”. My hair gets to a certain length and then just… stops.

  • I’m with you on the Pureology! My good friend is a colorist, and she got me started using it…what a difference! I’ve always had SUPER greasy hair (thanks for those genes, Dad) that had to be washed no matter what. Not with Pureology! My friend says it’s because the organic ingredients are gentle enough that they don’t strip away all of your natural oils…so my scalp doesn’t go into grease overdrive trying to compensate for a shampoo that is too stripping.

My husband is a Dermatology PA and he swears by Cerave. Best stuff ever…and nice and cheap!

I’ve recently become addicted to Chanel mascara. At 35 bucks a tube,it’s a little ridic. BUT I acquired a sample at Nordstrom one day…and WOW. Best mascara ever and definitely worth a little extra cash.

  • I swear by that mascara. LOVE!

  • I can not give up my Kerastase hair products but I love your reviews on everything else and you’ve motivated me to branch out from my usual products!

  • I used to love the Voluminous mascara, but then I tried Jordana Best Lash Extreme and it has stolen my heart ever since! It’s only $3 and works basically the same. I’m on my last tube and I can’t get it in Canada so I might have to go back to old trusty until I can make it across the border.

  • I love love love that BB cream. I did however switch over to the ponds BB cream and love it even more if that’s possible??

  • I love L’Oreal’s Voluminous mascara. It makes my eyelashes so long. I need to try the BB cream I seem to be reading about it everywhere.

  • It seems like my fair has taken forever to grow… def going to check out Purology when I get back to the states!

  • Teena

I love Cerave! I use the hydrating face wash and the AM lotion with SPF 30. I love both of them! I have used so many high-end brands of skincare products over the years, but none worked as well for me as Cerave. I also am a Pureology fan. I use the Strength Cure after my (former) stylist fried my hair. It not only repaired my hair, it is growing much quicker and is so much healthier. I am also a fan of L’Oreal mascaras. I love Clinique and Elizabeth Arden, but have found that L’Oreal works just as well for me and doesn’t flake (I’m looking at you Almay!). My other must-have beauty product is coconut oil. I use it to remove eye makeup, as a body moisutizer, as a deep conditioner for my hair, and I use it on my face at night mixed with a few drops of Vitamin E oil in lieu of a night cream. I have dry skin and have been using this for about 3 years now. It has completely changed the structure of my skin and is much more budget friendly (leaves me money to buy Pureology – HA!). Enjoyed your post.
